Hygge

[hoo ga] origin Norway, Denmark
1. life moments brimming with happiness, comfort, loved ones, favorite things, beautiful places; 2. savoring the present moment; 3. the good life

Hygge is a Danish word (well, to be historically accurate, it's Norwegian and the Danes began using it in the late 18th century) that really encompasses living a good, happy life. And seeing that Denmark is one of the happiest countries on Earth, there is something to this living a life filled with hygge. So there you have it - our definition for an otherwise undefinable concept.

People around the world have their own versions of hygge - in Jamaica they might say, "Don't worry, be happy mon." In the Sound of Music it would be when Fräulein Maria sings, "Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens. Bright copper kettles with warm woolen mittens. Brown paper packages tied up with strings. These are a few of my favorite things... When the dog bites, when the bee stings, When I'm feeling sad, I simply remember my favorite things, And then I don't feel so bad." She's got it right - when you stop to think about your favorite things, people, places, moments, you simply can't feel so bad. Instead, you might just feel pretty great.

So we're embracing and sharing hygge. Oh, it's a great word. It's more than just being happy - hygge is about the how to be happy. It's about recognizing all the good that is right in front of you. And if for some reason, the good is not visible in front of you, it's about intentionally shaping and creating your everyday life so that your moments really do bring you the feeling of a good, good life. Hygge.

We really believe that living an intentional life, one filled with hygge, is an ART. Hence our name:

The ART of living hygge.
